UK Man Awarded Dubious Honor

Written by Sue Walsh on July 14, 2008

Colin Wells, a Workshop Foreman for Stagecoach buses in the UK, holds a dubious honor. According to a study by ClearMyMail, his email account gets more spam than any other in the UK-over 16 million a year! That works out to an inbox busting 44,000 a day, fortunately all of it blocked.

One has to wonder what Mr. Wells is doing to have become such a spam target. Some of the best ways to get yourself on as many spam lists as possible include posting on lots of forums and Usenet newsgroups, signing up for all kinds of newsletters, including your email address when you sign a website’s guestbook, and when buying things online, not making sure the “share my info with third parties” is unchecked. It’s actually a very good idea to sign up for a throw away address from Yahoo, Hotmail, or GMail and use that for online shopping, forums, and the like. If it gets too clogged with spam you can simply close it and start another. Keep your “real” address (the one your ISP provides) for corresponding with friends and family.

Is Mr. Wells enjoying his newfound fame? That’s unclear, but his anti-spam provider is-they are using him in their marketing campaign!
