Microsoft Tops List of Worst SpammersWritten by Sue Walsh on August 15, 2012
Yes, you read that right. Microsoft, known for it’s unending and largely successful campaigns against spammers and botnets, is ironically one of the worst spammers on the net.
Researchers have found that a huge amount of spam is being pumped out by Microsoft-based IP addresses. So much that they were named the top spammer for March, April, and June of this year. Why is this happening? It’s speculated it may be due to MSN, their popular internet portal. Millions use it and it’s possible many of those users have infected computers. Hotmail could be another culprit although they’ve vastly improved their spam fighting techniques in recent years. Could infected computers at Microsoft be to blame? It’s possible, as Dropbox could tell them.
Microsoft was informed of the study and its results but chose not to respond. That seems a bit odd. You’d think a company so dedicated to fighting spammers would want to deal with that information head on. It would be sad if they were so busy fighting spam around the net that they overlooked a problem in their own backyards.
Why do you think so much spam is coming from Microsoft IP addresses? If your company was named a top spammer, how would you respond? Do you think Microsoft needs to step up to the plate and acknowledge their dubious honor? Why or why not? Do you think publicizing the results of these types of studies is a good idea?
